How To Become A Digital Marketer

I wanted to write a short article about how to become a digital marketer for free because I got fed up with all those misleading courses that play the middlemen and makes money in some case for no reason.

I got into Google in 2015 and that’s where my digital marketing journey started. I only mention this to ensure that the resources I’m sharing with you are available for free to all are exactly the same what I learnt from at Google. If you are interested in learning how to become a a digital marketer with no investment, this is for you.

Online marketers know people searching for like “how to become a digital marketer” are just about entering this filed and probably have no clue what they exactly need to do in order to success, so it’s easy to confuse them.

I mean, digital marketers make a living out of putting the information they want in front of you for specific search terms, right?! And online marketers wanna sell in order to make profit, so you can be sure there’re ads offering courses popping up for this search query.

(Let’s see how high I can rank organically – with a non-paid position – for the keyword “how to become a digital marketer” 😀 )

So it’s just easy to get overwhelmed with the plethora of choices and I personally don’t think these courses are any good or necessary most of the times; and definitely not better than the available-for-free, by-the-way-official resources by Google, Facebook and all the other respective platforms.

Here’s the reason why:

Online courses are not just selling you how to learn online marketing, but the dream how glamorous this life is. Salary expectations and lifestyle sells, not the reality of excel sheets.
None wants to hear the ugly truth that in life to succeed everything is hard work and watching a few videos won’t make you an expert. Therefore, they extract key points in these courses without going into too much details.

I’m not saying as a beginner digital marketer you need to learn everything at once, but why to pay to access less? Because there’s a next course to sell then…

Here’s the deal: Search engines and social media platforms make money on advertisers – on companies who promote their products on their platforms. Therefore for them it actually worth teaching how to learn using their advertiser platforms to spend their money efficiently, so these companies can make a profit on advertising. It’s a win-win for the platform and the advertiser too, both parties make money, easy as that.

Google for example is interested in teaching you how to advertise with them in a profitable way that will keep you spending money with them. Therefore all big platforms have their own course with the information you really need in a well structured & detailed way. Even better, you can get certified by them, most of the times for free.

Companies won’t even ask you about your online marketing course but whether you are certified by Google, Facebook or any other platform or not and that’s what matters in fact as these are the certificates that every company accepts anywhere!

I recommend getting these as in Google’s case it’s completely free. For Facebook the exam is quite a bitch and you also have to pay a fee, so companies don’t even require that when applying, however once you get the job they usually offer to pay it for you. It doesn’t mean you should not do the Facebook online course which is free.

Also, you don’t need to get crazy about getting certified in everything at once. I would recommend starting with one platform at a time.

And I know it’s more than just Google and Facebook out there, but once you learn these you will know the biggest search and social platforms and from there learning how to become a digital marketer on Bing, Yahoo, Baidu, Yandex, Naver – or Instagram, Twitter or LinkedIn on the social side – will work the same way.
